How to Start Your Winter Veggie Patch

Welcome to your Winter veggie patch plant guide.
Tip: Winter soil is full of nourishment and hydration which means it’s a great time to start your veggie patch.
Growing your own vegetables makes them taste so much better. All the work and care that went into that radish or artichoke means your first bite will taste more than delicious, it’ll taste like a warm hug after a long Winter’s day.
Whether you’re an experienced veggie gardener or new to the trade, make sure you have the right set-up for your veggie patch before you pat yourself on the back and watch your garden grow.
Vegetation Station
Start small and think about how much you and your family will eat. Although the idea of having an overflowing lush and healthy veggie patch is super fun, sometimes reality and expectation don’t match up.
Once you know what you want to plant, you can figure out how much space you’ll need. You don’t need a large space to start your veggie patch. If you don’t have a big backyard, don’t worry, you don’t need one – a balcony, a deck or even a container will work. A well kept 10×10 foot veggie patch will grow better produce than a 25×50 foot garden bed.
Prepare for harvest
Root veggies grow best in the winter when temperatures average between 10-20 C or lower. While filling and delicious, growing root veggies can be a bit tricky as they grow underground. This means you don’t know if there’s a problem until you harvest them. A good rule of thumb is to make sure the soil is loose enough for your veggies to send down the roots. If your soil isn’t the best quality, you’re better off growing your crops in a raised bed.
