Did you know?

Adding compost to your soil is generally a pretty simple task. Yet what happens inside your garden as the organic material in your compost mix decomposes is actually quite complex. Here’s what’s going inside your soil after you add compost:

When we say that compost is decomposing or breaking down, what’s actually happening is that micro-organisms and worms are slowly consuming the organic matter. Then they pass it back into your soil as dense, nutrient-rich dirt.

Nutrients aren’t the only benefit of composting! The microbial life and earthworms it attracts will also help to keep harmful pests and diseases away from your garden. Think of the bacteria in compost as your helpful little gardening assistants!

Composting can help to regulate drainage. Digging compost through your soil loosens tightly-packed soils like clay and creates more space for water to move around. It can also help dry, sandy soils to retain more moisture over time.
