Pesticides and Herbicides

Pests and diseases are part of gardening, but the right products used at the right time can keep problems under control without harming beneficial insects or the environment.

We stock a range of pest and disease control products including organic sprays, targeted insecticides, fungicides, and snail baits. We also carry preventative products that help stop problems before they start.

The first step in pest management is identifying the problem correctly. Different pests need different treatments, and using the wrong product wastes money and can harm beneficial insects. If you’re not sure what’s eating your plants, bring in a sample or a photo and our team can help identify it.

Organic and low-toxicity options are available for most common garden pests. Neem oil, pyrethrum, and horticultural oils are effective against many insects while being safer for bees, ladybirds, and other beneficial garden visitors.

Prevention is always better than cure. Healthy plants resist pests better than stressed ones. Good soil, proper watering, adequate spacing for air circulation, and regular garden hygiene all reduce pest problems.

Did You Know?

Managing pests effectively starts with understanding them. Here are a few things worth knowing:

  • Most garden pests have a natural predator. Ladybirds eat aphids, praying mantids eat caterpillars, and parasitic wasps control whitefly. Using broad-spectrum sprays kills these beneficial insects along with the pests, often making the problem worse in the long run.
  • Melbourne’s humid autumn conditions favour fungal diseases. Black spot on roses, powdery mildew, and rust are common in the cooler, damper months. Good air circulation and cleaning up fallen leaves helps prevent these diseases from taking hold.
  • Snails and slugs are most active after rain. Applying snail bait after a good Melbourne rainfall is more effective than applying it during dry weather. Iron-based baits are safer for pets and wildlife than the older metaldehyde-based products.
