Mulch

Did You Know?

Mulch is any material – usually organic – that you spread over the top of your soil. Common garden mulches include woodchips, compost mixes, straw or even grass clippings. Using mulch can have a lot of huge benefits for your garden!

  • It helps retain moisture. If you struggle with dry or sandy soil, Mulch is an excellent solution. The protective layer of mulch slows the natural evaporation of water from your soil, meaning that you can spend less time watering and more time relaxing.
  • It adds nutrients as it breaks down. As tiny insects and soil microbes steadily consume organic mulch, they will pass it back into your soil as compost. Choosing the right mulch is a great way to enrich and repair nutrient deficiencies in your soil.
  • It helps keep weeds away. A thick layer of mulch is a fantastic weed deterrent. It blocks their access through the soil and denies them sunlight, meaning that weeds will barely have a chance to sprout at all. Great news for green thumbs!
