  • Retaining walls over 500mm high may need council approval in Melbourne. Check with your local council before building. Walls under 500mm are generally exempt from permits, making small retaining walls a straightforward DIY project.
  • The base preparation matters more than the pavers themselves. A properly compacted base of crushed rock (at least 100mm deep) prevents pavers from sinking, shifting, or becoming uneven. Skipping this step is the most common reason paved areas fail.
