Perennials

Perennials are plants that come back year after year, which makes them a solid investment for any garden. Unlike annuals that need replanting each season, perennials establish themselves, grow bigger, and put on better displays over time.

We stock perennial varieties suited to Melbourne’s climate, including tough performers like salvias, lavender, Japanese anemones, and agapanthus. Perennials form the backbone of a well-planned garden bed, providing reliable colour and structure with less ongoing effort than annuals.

The beauty of perennials is that they reward patience. Most take a year or two to hit their stride, but once established, they fill out and flower more generously each season. Many can also be divided every few years to create more plants for free.

Most perennials prefer a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Plant them in autumn or spring, feed with a balanced fertiliser at the start of the growing season, and cut back spent flower stems to encourage a second flush of blooms.

Melbourne’s climate suits a wide range of perennials. Our cool winters give deciduous perennials the rest period they need, while warm summers bring out the best in Mediterranean species like lavender and salvia.

Perennials are the backbone of low-maintenance gardens. Here are a few useful things to know:

  • The old gardening saying about perennials is true: “First year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap.” Perennials spend their first year establishing roots, start filling out in the second, and hit full stride from the third year onwards. Be patient with new plantings.
