Rocks

Rocks add natural character and structure to garden landscapes. From feature boulders to garden bed edging, rocks create a permanent, low-maintenance element that anchors your garden design.

We stock a selection of natural rocks in various sizes, shapes, and colours for garden features, retaining, and decoration. Visit our Epping nursery to see what’s available and choose pieces that suit your garden.

Feature rocks work as focal points in garden beds, at the base of trees, and alongside water features. Smaller rocks are useful for edging beds, filling gaps in rock walls, and creating natural-looking borders.

Position feature rocks so they look like they’ve always been there. Bury them partially in the soil, angle them naturally, and group odd numbers together for the most pleasing effect.

    Did You Know?

Rocks are one of the most permanent elements you can add to a garden. Here are a few things worth knowing:

    • Odd numbers of rocks look more natural than even numbers. Grouping rocks in threes or fives creates a more natural, relaxed arrangement. This is a basic principle of Japanese garden design that works in any garden style.
    • Partially buried rocks look more settled and natural. A rock sitting on top of the soil looks like it was just placed there. Burying the bottom third into the ground gives it a permanent, natural appearance, as if it’s always been part of the landscape.
    • Rocks absorb heat during the day and release it at night. This creates a warm microclimate around nearby plants, which can benefit heat-loving species and help frost-tender plants survive cooler Melbourne nights in exposed positions.
