Sand

Sand is a versatile garden material used for paving base layers, improving drainage in heavy soils, building sandpits, and various construction tasks around the garden.

We stock several types of sand for different purposes, including washed sand for paving, brickie’s sand for mortar, and play sand for children’s sandpits. Each type is graded for its intended use.

Washed sand is used as a bedding layer under pavers, providing a smooth, level surface that allows for fine adjustment before laying. Brickie’s sand is coarser and used for making mortar and concrete.

Adding coarse sand to Melbourne’s heavy clay soils can improve drainage, but it needs to be mixed thoroughly. A thin layer of sand on top of clay actually makes drainage worse by creating a barrier.

Did You Know?

Sand serves many purposes in the garden and around the home. Here are a few things worth knowing:

  • The wrong type of sand can ruin a paving job. Always use washed paving sand (not brickie’s sand) as a bedding layer under pavers. Brickie’s sand contains clay that expands when wet, causing pavers to shift and become uneven.
  • Play sand must meet Australian Standards for children’s use. Certified play sand is washed, screened, and tested to be free of contaminants. Garden or building sand is not suitable for children’s sandpits.
  • Mixing sand into clay soil requires large quantities to be effective. You need at least a 50:50 mix of sand and clay to meaningfully improve drainage. Small amounts of sand in clay can actually make soil harder. Gypsum is often a more practical clay-breaker for Melbourne gardens.
