Screening Plants

Screening plants are tall-growing varieties used to block unwanted views, reduce wind, and create privacy in your garden. They’re taller and often faster-growing than hedging plants, making them ideal for boundary planting and windbreaks.

We stock over 70 screening plant varieties suited to Melbourne, including fast-growing options like Pittosporum, Photinia and tall Lilly Pillies. The right screening plant can give you a solid green wall within two-to-three years, providing privacy without the cost of a high fence.

Screening plants work best when you match the variety to the job. For a narrow space, look for columnar varieties like Slender Weavers Bamboo or Lilly Pilly “Sublime”. For a wide boundary, Photinia or Viburnum fill out generously. For a native screen that attracts birds, try Bottlebrush or tall Grevilleas.

Plant screening plants one-to-two metres apart (depending on the variety) along the line where you need coverage. Water well through the first two summers to encourage fast establishment. Most screening plants respond well to tip-pruning, which encourages bushy, dense growth rather than leggy, open growth.

Melbourne’s outer northern suburbs are often windier and more frost-prone than inner areas. Choose frost-hardy screening plants for exposed positions, and consider planting in a staggered double row for maximum wind protection.

Screening Plants

Did You Know?

Screening plants are one of the most practical additions to a Melbourne garden. Here are a few things worth knowing:

  • A row of screening plants can reduce wind speed by up to 50%. This protects other plants in your garden, reduces soil drying, and makes outdoor areas more comfortable. Unlike a solid fence, a plant screen filters wind rather than deflecting it, which actually provides better protection.
  • Screening plants grow faster when they’re young. Tube stock and smaller pots establish quicker than advanced plants, and often catch up within a couple of years. They’re also significantly cheaper if you’re planting a long row.
  • Not all screening plants are evergreen. If you need year-round privacy, make sure you choose an evergreen variety. Deciduous screens like ornamental pears look great but will lose their leaves in winter, leaving gaps for several months.
