Terracotta has been used for plant pots for thousands of years, and for good reason. Here are a few things worth knowing:

  • Terracotta breathes, which prevents root rot. The porous clay allows excess moisture to evaporate through the pot walls, creating healthier root conditions. This natural drainage is why experienced gardeners often prefer terracotta for herbs and Mediterranean plants.
  • The white residue on terracotta pots is mineral buildup, not damage. As water evaporates through the clay, it leaves behind mineral deposits (efflorescence). This is normal and gives pots a weathered, aged look. Scrub with vinegar and water if you prefer a clean appearance.
  • Soaking new terracotta pots in water before planting helps your plants. Dry terracotta absorbs moisture from the potting mix, robbing your newly potted plant of water. Soaking the pot for an hour before planting saturates the clay so it won’t steal moisture from the soil.
