Description
Australia’s national floral emblem. A fast-growing native tree covered in masses of bright yellow, fluffy ball flowers from late winter through spring — one of the first signs of spring in Melbourne. The fine, grey-green phyllodes (modified leaves) give it a soft, feathery look.
Hardy, drought tolerant, and quick to establish. Grows in full sun with well-drained soil. Useful for screening, windbreaks, and adding quick height to new gardens. Short-lived (10-15 years) but fast to fill a space.
Botanical name: Acacia pycnantha
